The
exact etiology of POPSS syndrome is not known. Several different causes are
mentioned such as infection, impaired circulation, venous congestion, and nerve
entrapment. In our series, we feel that the majority of our patients' problems
can be explained as tendonitis (enthesopathy).
Ninety-three,
or forty-six percent (46%) of patients, gave histories of lower abdominal
surgeries, the most common being hysterectomies, C-sections, and bladder
suspensions. Nineteen males gave histories of previous groin hernia surgeries.
Think
of POPSS when presented with unexplained dyspareunia, especially when present
after hysterectomy and bilateral salpino-oophorectomy.
